CUT FLOWER CARE GUIDE
Five Easy Steps for Long-Lasting Cut Flowers
If you’ve been struggling to keep fresh flowers alive or are tired of wasting money on flowers that die within just a couple of days, then you’ll LOVE these simple tips for keeping flowers alive on your table for longer!
Hey! I’m Jenny Marks, owner of Trademarks Flower Farm.
.
When I was younger, whenever I was gifted flowers I was always disappointed that they didn’t last very long. What was the point of buying something that just died a few days later? Well, little did I know that you actually had to CARE for cut flowers! Once I learned these 5, super easy cut flower care steps, my relationship with flowers completely changed! I now grow flowers for a living AND I keep them alive on my table for at least an entire week (if not more!). It’s my goal to get your flowers to last that long, too!
5 EASY STEPS FOR LONG-LASTING CUT FLOWERS:
Step 1.
Never keep flowers out of water for any extended length of time. When picking up your flowers, be sure to bring them straight home or put them in a vase with water during transport if you are driving a longer distance. Never let them run out of water in a vase.
Step 2:
Use EXTREMELY CLEAN vases. Clean thoroughly with soap and water and disinfect (with bleach) before each use. Glass, plastic, or ceramic vases work best, try to avoid metal. Don’t skip this step- it makes a HUGE difference!
Step 3:
Remove any and all foliage and leaves that will fall below the water line of your vase. Give the stem ends of the flowers a quick snip (about a half inch or so) and plunge immediately into cool water.
Step 4:
Store flowers in a cool place out of direct sunlight and if possible, away from ripening fruit and vegetables (they emit ethylene gas, which causes flowers to wilt or can cause them to have a shortened vase-life).
Step 5:
Re-trim the stems and change the water DAILY (or every other day if you can’t.) Sanitize the vases when you change the water if you REALLY want your flowers to last!
Step 6:
Last but not least, ENJOY YOUR BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS!
A Special Note about “Dirty Flowers”:
Some cut flowers types have a tendency to turn the water in the vase dirty or murky quickly, which causes the flowers to die more quickly. These flowers are aptly nick-named “dirty flowers.” Most of these flowers have hairy stems, or secrete a sap when cut, which seem to be the culprit of creating dirtier water. These flowers benefit from putting a drop of bleach in the water or the use of flower food to help combat bacteria from forming! The following flowers are commonly referred to as the “dirty dozen,” and are the ones you need to watch out for most:
Stock
Yarrow
Rudbeckia
Zinnias
Dahlias
Gerbera Daisies
Marigold
Sunflower
Amaranth
Celosia
Feverfew
Snapdragons
For the Love of Flowers:
It’s important to remember that cut flowers are living things that are very perishable and fleeting, and should be taken care of properly. Their beauty brings so much joy and happiness into our lives, and they perk up the atmosphere in any room- they are SO worth the extra effort!
I really hope these tips & tricks have inspired you to care for your blooms, so you can get the most enjoyment out of them as possible!
